Heat Pumps

Heat pumps move heat from a source (effluent, raw water, hall air, ground or waste heat) into culture water or the building. In cold climates, heating can be one of the largest OPEX items in land-based farming — so heat recovery is often critical for energy economics.

Typical aquaculture applications
  • Heat recovery from effluent into intake/make-up.
  • Tempering of RAS halls and process water.
  • Coupling to industrial waste heat or district heating where available.
Why it pays to think early
  • Power price and heat demand drive profitability more than “installed kW”.
  • Good insulation and hydraulics reduce the heat duty required.
  • Size for both winter peak and summer conditions.
  • Maintain filters, heat exchangers and refrigerant per supplier.

Heat pumps raise CAPEX but can cut OPEX sharply over the facility lifetime — a classic CAPEX/OPEX trade-off. See temperature, CAPEX & OPEX and sustainability.
