PFAS is a growing regulatory issue in drinking water, environmental protection and industrial water management. In recent years both Sweden and the European Union have introduced new requirements for monitoring, analysis and risk assessment of PFAS in water.

EU Drinking Water Directive
PFAS is covered by the EU’s revised Drinking Water Directive (EU 2020/2184), which introduces monitoring of PFAS in drinking water. The directive includes parameters for both Sum PFAS and PFAS Total.

Sweden and PFAS in drinking water
In Sweden drinking water is regulated among other things through Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) regulations and guidance. Municipal waterworks and other drinking-water producers often need to sample for PFAS, assess occurrence, document control programmes and evaluate the need for treatment.

What is the difference between PFAS-4, Sum PFAS and PFAS Total?
The terms are often used in parallel but describe different ways of reporting PFAS.
PFAS-4. PFAS-4 is often used in Swedish contexts and covers four particularly closely watched PFAS compounds: PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS and PFNA. See PFAS-4.
Sum PFAS. Sum PFAS is the sum of a larger number of specific PFAS compounds that are analysed and reported together.
PFAS Total. PFAS Total aims to give a broader picture of the overall PFAS load, including more substances than a traditional Sum PFAS analysis.
Which parameter is used depends on the legal framework, the analytical method and reporting requirements.
What happens if a limit value is exceeded?
If elevated PFAS concentrations are found, the following measures may apply:

- Risk assessment
- Source tracing
- Strengthened control programme
- Installation of treatment
- Follow-up monitoring
Common treatment technologies include:
- Activated carbon (GAC)
- Ion exchange
- Zeolites
- Reverse osmosis (RO)
- Specialized adsorption media
