Saturation, Supersaturation, Nitrogen

Excess total gas pressure — especially nitrogen (N₂) — can cause gas bubble disease (GBD). Risk is highest with supersaturated source water, incorrect pumping under pressure or rapid heating of water with dissolved gas.

Practical measures
  • Degas source water before it reaches the fish.
  • Avoid sucking air into lines under vacuum.
  • Monitor total gas pressure where the risk is known.
  • Link CO₂ control to the oxygen strategy — both are gas balance.
